3/24/09 -- Racing is a Tough Sport (Sebring Report) By: Walters Web Design SEBRING, FL - (March 24th, 2009) -- “Racing is a tough sport. You have got to be a tougher person.” Those were the words that were stressed to Sage on the flight home from Sebring Raceway. Karam’s initial Skip Barber National race didn’t go according to plan and it ended up being a tough lesson. Sage got bottled up in qualifying and landed 19th on the grid. Karam used his race craft to muster up a 14th place finish in race #1. “It’s too easy to blame the car. I realize that I could have done better as a driver. A lot of things went on around me that I didn’t expect”, said Sage. “Gerardo (Bonilla), my driving coach, and I worked very hard to succeed. I learned a lot. We won’t be outworked”. Not surprising, nobody passed more cars than Sage during the race and he was the “hard charger” of the day. Friday’s qualifying was cancelled due to foggy track conditions, pitting Sage in the 16th position. “I got a fairly good start, but, I had trouble moving forward and even holding my position after the start. I am not satisfied with my 13th place finish and plan on working hard to improve for Virginia (VIR) in five weeks”, added Sage. The Sebring experience was a whirlwind for the young driver. “I thought it was awesome to meet representatives from Mazda, BP and the media. I even met Mr. Skip Barber. It was exciting for me, to see the ALMS, Star Mazda and Atlantics on the same track as myself. It’s easy to get caught up in the media attention, functions and other commitments. In the future I need to focus more on my driving”. Karam is the 2009 Skip Barber Shootout Grand Prize winner and is also a MazdaSpeed Developmental Ladder driver. “I’d like to thank Oso*Fresh, Mazda, the Skip Barber personnel including the mechanics, Gerardo Bonilla and my parents for the opportunity and experience I had,” said Sage.
