Race Report: 1/20/08 - Florida Winter Tour Homestead, FL

By: Karam Racing

HOMESTEAD, FL - (January 25th, 2008) -- Sage Karam continued to demonstrate progress, over the weekend, at the Florida Winter Tour. Sage placed 8th in the JICA race on Saturday. It was only the first time he competed in the Junior ICA class.

On Sunday, Sage qualified 7th in the rain. Rain is the factor where the “real drivers” emerge. So, the excellent qualifying spot was a great indicator of Sage’s talent. As the track dried for the Pre-final, the slick tires were installed. The first couple of laps were dicey, but, the slick conditions allowed the talented drivers to work towards the front. Karam found himself as the youngest driver in the field to lead the JICA race!

Sage finished with a 2nd place prefinal. Starting on the outside pole, caused Sage to get hung out and shuffled back to 8th on the start. Sage progressed to 4th before DNF’ing with a technical malfunction.

“I was shocked with how well things went over the weekend,” replied Sage. “I never expected to be doing this well so quickly. Mikey Giessen (Sage’s engineer) and Chris Lobaugh did a fantastic job of preparing the chassis for me.”

“We always look towards the FWT as a great opportunity for us to the test chassis’, engines and setups. The event is professionally conducted and first-class. Last year we only won one race down here. The competition here doesn’t allow you to slack. I believe the preparation/testing we did last year here (FWT) is a primary reason we dominated last year’s National scene”, added Sage’s dad, Jody Karam.

“I’m glad the JICA sponsorship finally came through. The support allows me to move up from Cadets and not worry about materials. I’m confident I’ll be competitive on the National JICA scene soon. From what I’ve seen over the weekend, it’s just a matter of getting seat time. Obviously, the Florida racers have a big advantage on us now, but that’s ok, it will only make me tougher. All I need now is my mom to buy me a track to practice on!” laughed Sage.

Sage would like to thank his sponsors and supporters: Michael Andretti, MRP, Gary, Chris and Tim Lobaugh, Brent Ebert, Rick, Doug Fleming, Grand Products, Noonan Pedal Risers, Bell Helmets, Aplinestars, Orwig Management, SmitHahn Co., L & T Clutches, Strober Building Supplies, On Track Promotions, and Walters Web Design.
