Sage Karam Ends Successful Season with Great Stars Weekend in Las Vegas

By: Karam Racing

LAS VEGAS, NV- (October 27th, 2007) -- Over the weekend, Sage Karam put the finishing touches on an amazing Cadet and Junior Sportsman career, by capturing the Stars of Karting National Championship. This was a record setting 3 rd Stars of Karting National Points Championship! Heading into the weekend with a 50 point lead in the cadet category, Sage needed to finish only 5 th in both features to seal up the title.

Sage had the usual amazing Birel MRP chassis setup and blistering horsepower from Doug Fleming. Without having to be concerned about points, Sage took the pole position in qualifying by over .3! Unfortunately, he had to minimize his chances of a DNF during the remainder of the weekend by driving in a points-conservation mode.

During the features, Sage played a little cat-and-mouse with his opponents, at times dropping down even 7 th place before breaking away within the 3-kart group. Sage let his opponents know he was there throughout both features, but, never attempted the patented “Sage moves” to win the features. “It was a bummer having to hold back to avoid a possible DNF. I learned a lesson from the WKA New Castle event. I was real close to throwing out the championship because I wanted to win the race. I wasn’t going to make that mistake. The Championship means a lot to me. The Lobaughs and Doug Fleming are the best. I really can’t thank them enough. I didn’t want to let them down. In the beginning of the year, we all set the championships as our goal.”

Sage’s success this year was remarkable.

Karam was the Stars of Karting’s first National Champion in the organizations inaugural year. In fact, Sage has only missed one Stars of Karting event ever. He won the now defunct Kid Kart category. He moved to the cadet class at 7 years old and podiumed as an 8 year-old in the WKA. Sage is the youngest driver to ever win a Stars of Karting National feature at only 9 years old (9 years and 4 months).

Surprisingly, the decision to move up to JICA was revisited again yesterday. “First and foremost, the WKA and the Stars of Karting organizations must be approached about allowing Sage to advance to JICA one year early. I think they’d approve it, but, out of respect for the rules, they’d have to open the door first. Secondly, I am concerned over Sage’s low body-weight (79 lbs) and his ability to stay safe, (in the JICA class) not to mention the economics of it all. Obviously, he has the track sense to move to JICA, I just want to be sure we aren’t setting him up for serious injury. We currently don’t have a JICA engine program and cadet racing is fairly economical. I thought it was a done deal (jr sportsman racing), we sold everything for Junior Sportsman racing over the weekend. The kid wants to advance, and I’d like to see him in JICA too. The team and I will discuss the situation again and decide what is best for Sage,” said Sage’s dad, Jody.

Sage would like to thank his sponsors and supporters: Michael Andretti, MRP, Gary, Chris and Tim Lobaugh, Brent Ebert, Rick, Doug Fleming, Grand Products, Noonan Pedal Risers, Bell Helmets, Aplinestars, Orwig Management, SmitHahn Co., L & T Clutches, Strober Building Supplies, On Track Promotions, and Walters Web Design.
