Race Report: Beaumont, CA - Stars of Karting

Written By: Karam Racing

BEAUMONT, CA - (September 17th, 2007) -- Sage Karam captured his 28th National title over the weekend at the Stars of Karting National championships at Moran Speedway. The win secured Sage the Stars of Karting Western Championship. Sage has now won both the Stars East and West Cadet crowns this year.

Sage was quick to give credit for his victory to his team, “I was sure that Tim (Birel MRP America Cadet tuner) would hit the setup for me. We all had to work a little harder because I never drove this track before. I was told that many of my competitors were here before and practiced. Doug Fleming gave me another new engine to try and we just decided to go with it. Doug just keeps turning out one great engine after another. I think that is the 6 th different engine we won with this year.”

Sage’s dad, Jody, was on hand to offer Sage some support over the weekend. “I never really worry about Sage on the track. I am more concerned with the things that go on around him. I tell Sage that “If he’s around trouble, he’s in trouble”. It’s relieving when he checks out with a driver he can trust, like he did during Sunday’s feature. I was the first guy to shake Sage’s opponent’s hand after the race. I think that kid did a great job of racing Sage clean.”

Sage won on Sunday starting from 10th position in the prefinal. “We worked on going out (qualifying) with the fast guys and missed our opportunity. When I did get out, the needles needed adjusting and I found myself 3 laps down on warm tires. It was just something different we tried”, replied Sage. “My dad, Tim and Chris kept telling me I could still do well from even the 10 th starting spot. I was glad things worked out”.

“A lot of people have been asking me about the ABC News NASCAR show that I was on. It was a lot of fun, but very challenging. I think it was a great experience for me to have. I learned a lot about the media and how to speak in front of a news camera. I’ve received many emails from around the country. It’s been neat reading them and responding to them. I was lucky to have been chosen for such an opportunity and I appreciate it all”, replied Sage.

Two weeks ago sage captured the Mid West Sprint Series WKA Divisional overall Championship in the HPV category. Sage not only won the HPV event by 12 seconds, but also won the Yamaha class the previous day in a rainstorm.

Next week sage will be back in New Castle for another WKA event. The season will wrap up in mid-October at the Stars of Karting Championship Finale in Las Vegas. Details will follow.

Sage would like to thank his sponsors and supporters: Michael Andretti, MRP, Gary, Chris and Tim Lobaugh, Brent Ebert, Rick, Doug Fleming, Grand Products, Noonan Pedal Risers, Bell Helmets, Aplinestars, Orwig Management, SmitHahn Co., L & T Clutches, Strober Building Supplies, and Walters Web Design.
