Race Report: Shawano, WI - Stars of Karting

Written By: Karam Racing

SHAWANO, WI - (August 7th, 2007) -- Sage Karam extended his National Championship tally to 27 over the weekend with 2 more wins. Not only did Sage win both races, he captured the SnapOn Stars of Karting East Cadet Championship…again. Karam swept all 6 events in the season long schedule. The IRL Stars of Karting Finale will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada, in October.

Saturday’s race went close to plan with a signature Sage move on the last lap to win it. Sage and his opponent became feisty with 3 or 4 turns to go. Sage actually managed to get the kart back on the track after being bumped off for the win.

On Sunday’s feature, the original start of the race, Sage applied the brakes going into turn two allowing a close following kart to knock him off the track. Sage left the track airborne and flew through the fencing surrounding the track. Fortunately for Sage, the race was red flagged due to a separate serious accident involving two other drivers.

After reviewing the damage and Sage’s condition, it was determined that he’d be allowed to participate in the complete restart. Sage lead every lap, except for one, from start to finish. But, on the last lap he was passed and it appeared to be a runner-up finish. Sage had other plans. On the last turn of the race, his opponent laid down a block that opened the door for Sage. Sage obviously pounced on the opportunity and captured the win in exciting style!

“The MRP prepared Birel Cadet chassis was just perfect,” claimed Sage. It is a brand new chassis sent over from Italy for me to test and it is unbelievable.” First time in the new chassis, Sage put in on pole position while qualifying. Doug Fleming (between stealing pickles from my cooler) kept the Comer powerplant sizzling. “The Lobaughs and Doug Fleming have been so instrumental in our championship run,” added Sage.

The Birel driver has now locked up the World Karting Association’s Cadet National title and the Stars of Karting Eastern title. Sage will be testing more JICA setups at South Bend this week. “I love testing at South Bend. I feel South Bend and BeaveRun are challenging tracks that offer a safe and fair environment. It’s tough to find tracks this good that are close to my house in Nazareth, Pa. BeaveRun has the best cadet racing east of South Bend, I’d like to make it to one of their club races too”, said Sage.

“We always seek out the best competition. Let’s face it, you’re only as good as your competition. So, we don’t mind driving the extra miles to find those guys.”

Sage would like to thank his sponsors and supporters: Michael Andretti, MRP, Gary, Chris and Tim Lobaugh, Brent Ebert, Rick, Doug Fleming, Grand Products, Noonan Pedal Risers, Bell Helmets, Aplinestars, Orwig Management, SmitHahn Co., L & T Clutches, Strober Building Supplies, and Walters Web Design.
